Tissainayagam out on bail
Imprisoned journalist Jeyaprakash Tissainayagam was enlarged on bail today on grounds of health, pending the appeal of his conviction. Tissainayagam was convicted under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) last year, for arousing “communal feelings” by writing and publishing articles that criticized the government’s treatment of Sri Lankan Tamil civilians affected by the war, and for raising money for the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam through his magazine, The North Eastern Monthly
Speaking to the media immediately after leaving the Appeals Court, the journalist who was sentenced for twenty years of rigorous imprisonment said that he was grateful to the friends, closest allies and the media activists who stood by him in the last two years.
“Tissanayagam was the first person to be convicted for something he wrote and published”, said Sunil Jayasekera of the Free Media Movement. He added that as the watchdog and advocacy body for media freedom in Sri Lanka, they were happy, and that they were looking forward to justice being served for the veteran journalist.
The Appeals Court order to release Tissainayagam on bail was given on Monday, January 11, and lawyers representing Tissainayagam stated that he would be released on the following day. Tuesday, January 12 saw a handful of media personnel outside the Welikada Prison, but he was finally released today at the Appeals Court clad in a long sleeved shirt and tie, in a stark contrast to the other prisoners whom he arrived with.
Tissainayagam was arrested on March 7, 2008 by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID), when he visited his employee V. Jasikeran and wife who were in custody . Attempts by his lawyer to see him on March 10 were refused, and Tissanayagam was only informed that he was arrested under the PTA on March 21, more than two weeks after his arrest. He was charged months later after being held without charge, in a trial which saw interest gathered from the local and international media and human rights spheres.
Tissanayagam who was a columnist for the Sunday Times, was kept under detention orders for more than five hundred days prior to being charged under the PTA. During his trial, Tissanayagam claimed that he was harassed and threatened by the TID while under detention and that the confession produced as evidence was a document that was dictated to him by the TID. Repeated applications for bail before and during his trial were turned down.
Media Freedom has become a topic which is widely discussed at the run up to the Presidential Elections. Both leading candidates have promised greater freedom to the press, in a country which has seen numerous journalists and media activists killed, including the Editor of the Sunday Leader Lasantha Wickrematunge, during the tenure of the current administration, and many leaving the country in fear of their personal safety.

පසුගිය කාලය පුරාවට ශ්රී ලංකා මාධ්ය ඉතිහාසයේ කණගාටුදායක සිදුවිම් රාශියක් සිදුවිය. ඝාතන පැහැර ගැනීම් බියවැද්දවීම් පහරදීම් මේ සියල්ල මෙම සිද්ධින් ගොනුවට ඇතුලත්ය. මෙයින් ප්රධානතම සහ විශාල වශයෙන් කතාබහට සහ කැපී පෙනෙන සිද්ධිය වන්නේ සන්ඩේ ලීඩර් පුවත්පතෙහි කතා ලසන්ත වික්රමතුංග ඝාතනය වීමය. මාධ්ය ඉතිහාසයේ ගවේෂණාත්මක පුවත් වාර්තාකරණයේ පළමු ස්ධානය හිම් කරගත් වික්රමතුංගයන්ගේ සාහසික ඝාතනයට ජනවාරි අටවනදාට අවුරුද්දක් ඉක්ම යන්නේය.
අවුරුද්දක් ගත වන තුරුද එම ඝාතනයට හෝ වෙනත් මාධ්ය සහෘදයන්ගේ ඝාතන හෝ පහරදිම්වලට සම්බන්ද කිසිවකුට නීත්යෙන් දඩුවම් ලැබී හෝ වරදකරුවන් ග්රහණය කර ගැනීමේ හැකියාවක් ලැබී නොමැත. මෙකී තත්ත්වයේ වගකිව යුත්තන් කවරකු වුවද අවසානයට සිදුවී ඇත්තේ රටක් වටිනා මිනිසුන් අහිමිවිමය.
වික්රමතුංගයන්ගේ ඝාතනයෙන් පසු දැනෙන්නාවූ වේදනාව හා අඩුපාඩුව දැනෙන්නේ වෙන කිසිවකුට හෝ නොව ශ්රී ලාංකේය මාධ්ය කලාවට හා ඔහුගේ පවුලේ සහ ම්තුරු පිරිස වෙතය. සන්ඬේ ලීඩර් පුවත් පතෙහි සේවය කළ සියලු මාධ්ය සහෘදයින් එක පවුලක් ලෙස සේවය කළේය. එකී පවුලේ මූලිකයා වූයේ වික්රමතුංගයන්ය. පියානන්ගේ වියෝවෙන් වේදනාවට පත් සන්ඬේ ලීඩර් පුවත් පතෙහි මන්දනා ස්මයින් අඩබ් වික්රම පවසන්නේ පුවත්පත් මාධ්ය කලාවට නව මුහුනුවරක් එක් කිරීමට ලසන්ත වික්රමතුංගයන්ට හැකි වූ බවයි.
‘‘ ලංකාවේ ගවේෂණාත්මක් පුවත්පත් කලාවක් තිබුණත් ඒක කැපී පෙනුනෙ නැහැ. සන්ඬේ ලීඩර් පුවත්පත පටන් අරන් අවුරුදු පහළොවක් ගත වෙද්දී විශාල වැඩ කොටසක් සිද්ධ කරන්න පුළුවන් කමක් ලැබුණා.හොරකම් මැරකම් වංචා දූෂණ එළි කරන්න හැකියාවක් ලැබුණා.’’ ඇය පැවසුවාය.
ඒ හේතුව නිසාවෙන්ම පුවත්පතට මෙන්ම වික්රමතුංගයන්ටද තර්ජන එල්ල විය. එහෙත් කිසිදු අභියෝගයක් හමුවේ එතුමා නොසැලූන බව අබේවික්රම පැවසුවාය. ඔහුගෙන් පසු පැමිණි ඔහුගේ යටතේ සේවය කළ මාධ්යවේදීන්හට ඔහුගේ ගමන් මාර්ගයේ ගමන් කිරිමට ඔහු පුහුණු කළේය. ඔහුගේ පසුකාලීනයන් හට සැපයු ආදර්ශ පාඨය වූයේ හඩක් නැති අයට හඩක් වෙන්න යනුවෙනි.
ඔහු හැම වෙලාවෙම කීවේ ඇත්ත කියන්න බය වෙන්න එපා කියලා. හැමවෙලාවෙම සත්ය වෙනුවෙන් පෙනී හිටින්න කියලයි අපට ඉගැන්නුවේ.ඇය පැවසුවේය.
ලාංකේය ජනමාධ්යයේ ඒ හිඩස පුරවන්න කාටවත් බැරි වේවි. නිර්භයව ලියන්න කෙනෙක් දැන් නැහැ. තරුන පිරිස ලසන්ත දිහා බැලූවෙ ලොකු ගෞරවයකින්. අපක්ෂපාතී ජනමාධ්ය කලාවක් ගෙනියන්න ලසන්තට පුළුවන් වුණේ ඔහුගේ නිර්භීත කම නිසා. ඇය පැහැදිලි කළාය.
නොයෙක් වාරණයන් පැවති අවස්ථාවන් වලදී පවා කිසිවිටෙකත් ඔහුගේ කණ්ඩායම පාලනය නොකළ බව සන්ඩේලීඩර් පුවත් පතෙහි මාධ්යවේදිනියක් ලෙස සේවය කරන දිල්රුක්ෂි හදුන්නෙත්ති පැවසුවාය.
කිසිවිටෙකත් එහුගේ ඹාධ්ය සගයින් මග නොහරින ඔවුන් පසුපස හඹායමින් ඔවුන් නිවැරදි මගට ගන්න හැමවෙලාවකම කටයුතු කළා. ඉස්සරහදි ගවේශණාත්මක වාර්තාකරණය සිදු කරන්න කෙනෙක් නැති වෙයි. මොකද දැන් ඉන්න අය ගොඩක් බයයි මේ සිද්ධි වලින් පස්සේ. මේකට හොදම උදාහරණය තමයි ලසන්තගේ මරණෙන් පස්සේ මාධ්යවේදින් විශාල සංඛ්යාවක් පිටරට වලට යාම.ඇය පැවසුවාය.
අපරටෙහි මාධ්ය සංසකෘතිය පිරිහෙමින් පවතින බවත් ස්වයං වාරණයට ලක්වෙමින් පවතින බවත් ඇය පැවසුවාය.
කෙසේ වුවද මෙසේ ගිය හොත් ලාංකිය මාධ්ය ක්ෂේත්රයේ අගතිය නොබෝ කලකින් දැක ගැනීමේ හැකියාවක් ලැබෙන බව ඇය පෙන්වා දෙනු ලැබුවාය.
කෙසේ වුවද ඉහ මෙළ නැති ෂත්යට සවන් දිය නොහැකි මෝඩයින් සිටිනා දේශයක වික්රමතුංගයන්ගේ වටිනාකම වටහා ගැනීමට තරම්වූ මාධ්ය ක්ෂේත්රයෙන් පරිභාහිර එකදු පුද්ගලයකු හෝ නොමැති වීම කණගාටුවට කරුණකි. මෙම ඝාතනය සිදු කර පලා ගිය පිරිස හැංගී හිනැහෙනවා වෙන්නට පුළුවන. නමුදු යථාර්ථය කෙදිනක හෝ එළි බැසිය යුතුය. එතෙක් උපේක්ෂාවෙන් බලා සිටීම අප සැමගේ වගකීම වන්නේය.
ආතර් වාමනන් සන්ඬේ ලීඩර් පුවත් පතෙහි සේවයේ නියුතු ලාබාල මාධ්යවේදියා වික්රමතුංගයන් ඔහුගේ පියා හා සම කරන්නේ කිසිදු පැකිලීමකින් තොරවය.
ලසන්ත හොයා ගන්න එක කතාවක් අවසානය දක්වා අරන් යනවා. කිසිදු පැකිළිමක් නැහැ. ඒ වගේම නිදහස ඕන තරම් තිබුණා.හැමදාම හිනා වෙලා හැම දෙයකටම මුහුණ දුන්න කෙනෙක්.උඩගු අහංකාරකම් තිබුණෙ නැති පුද්ගලයෙක්. ඔහු සමග රණ්ඩුවෙලා හරි අදහස් හුවමාරු කර ගන්න පුළුවන් කෙනෙක්. අපට ආව හැම ප්රශ්ණෙකදිම ඔහු අපි ළගින් හිටියා වාමනන් පැවසුවේය.
ඔහුගේ අඩුව පිරවීමට කිසිවෙකුට නොහැක. මාධ්යකරුවන් හැර එය දැනෙනා කිසිවකුද නොමැත. ඔහු මිය ගොස් හමාරය .නමුදු මතකය සදාතනිකය. කෙසේ වුවද ලසන්ත වික්රමතුංග යනු ඔහුම පමණය.
The Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge’s assassins as well those involved in attacking other media personnel are yet to be apprehended. A pioneer in the field of investigative journalism, Wickrematunge managed to introduce new parameters to the field. Unafraid to speak the truth, Wickrematunge believed in being a voice for the voiceless. Through The Sunday Leader, he managed to expose incidents of bribery, corruption and fraud for the past 15 years, opening himself as well as the institution to many threats. Wickrematunge’s death a year ago has created vacuum in the media field, especially in investigative journalism. He was one of a kind.

2010 දෙසැම්බර් 8 වැනිදාත් සුපුරුදු පරිදි සන්ඩේ ලීඩර් පුවත්තේ කාර්යාලයේ වැඩ කටයුතු ආරම්භ වෙමින් තිබුනේය. පත්තර කන්තෝරුවේ වැඩ කටයුතු සාමාන්ය ආකාරයට ඇරඹෙමින් පවතින අවස්ථාවේදී සාමාන්යයෙන් පුවත්පත් කාර්යාලයට නොපැමිණෙන පිරිසක්ද එම කාර්යාලය වෙත පැමිණෙමින් තිබුනේය. මෙසේ පැමිණෙන්නන් ලීඩර් පුවත්පත් කාර්යාලට අමුත්තන් වූයේ නැත. මෙසේ පැමිණෙමින් සිටි බොහෝ දෙනෙක් මීට පෙර සන්ඩේ ලීඩර් පුවත්පත ආරම්භ කළ ලසන්ත වික්රමතුංග සමග පුවත්පතේ සේවය කළ අයය. මාධ්යවේදීන් වූ ඔවුන් අතරින් බොහෝ දෙනෙකුගේ මාධ්ය ජීවිතය ආළෝකමත් කර ගැනීමට වික්රමතුංගගෙන් නොමද පිටුවහලක් ලැබී තිබුනේය. මෙදින මේ ආකාරයට පැමිණ සිටි ඇතැම් අය ඔහුට ආදරය කළ අයය. නැතිනම් වික්රමතුංගගේ පත්තර ජීවිතයට ආදරය කළ අයය.
ලසන්ත සමීපය ඇසුරුකළ පුද්ගලයින් ලීඩර් පුවත්පත් කාර්යාලය වෙත පැමිණියත් වෙනදා සිනාමුසු මුහුණින් සිටින ලසන්ත ඔවුන් කිසිකෙනෙකුටවත් මුණගැසුනේ නැත. ඔවුන් පැමිණි බව කියන්න ලසන්ත පත්තර කන්තෝරුවේ සිටියේ නැත. සිනාමුසු මුහුණින් කර්තෘමණ්ඩලයේ ඔබ මොබ යන ලසන්න වෙනුවට ලීඩර් කර්තෘමණ්ලයට ඇතුළුවන දොරටුව අසල ලසත්තගේ විශාල පින්තූරයක් විය. සුපුරුදු සුන්දර සිනාවෙන් සිටින ලසන්තගේ පින්තූරය බොහෝ දෙනාගේ මතකය අදින් මීට වසරක පෙර දක්වා ගෙන ගියේය.
ලසන්තගේ විශාල ප්රමාණයේ කටවුට් එක අසල පහන් තබා තිබූ අතර ලීඩර් කර්තෘමාණ්ඩලකයින් විසින් ඒ අසලින් මල් තබමින් සිටියේය. ලීඩර් පුවත්පතේ සේවය කළ පුවත්පත හැරගොස් මෙදින නැවත කාර්යාලයට පැමිණ සිටි තවත් ය තැනින් තැනට වී ලසන්ත පිළිබදව වන මතකයන් අලූත් කරමින් සිටියේය.
‘‘ගිය අවුරුද්දේ මේ වෙනකොට සේරම වෙලා ඉවරයි.’’ උදෑසන එකොළහයි තිහ පමණ වන විට තමන්ගේ අත් ඔරලෝසුව දෙස බලමින් ලීඩර් පුවත්පතේ කර්තෘමාණ්ඩලිකයෙක් තවත් අයෙකුට පැවසුවේය.
2009 වසරේ ජනවාරි 8 වැනිදා ලසන්ත සුපුරුදු පරිදි තමන්ගේ නිවසේ සිට මොටර් රථයෙන් ලීඩර් පුවත්පත් කාර්යාලය වෙත පැමිණෙමින් සිටියේය. තමන් බලාපොරොත්තු වූ පරිදි කාර්යාලයට පැමිණීමට ලසන්තට වාසනාව ලැබුනේ නැත. ඒ දිනයෙන් පසු කවදාවත් ඔහු තමන් ආදරය කළ ලීඩර් පුවත්පත් කාර්යාලයට පැමිණියේ නැත. සිය කාර්යාලට කිලෝමීටර කීපයක් තිබියදී යතුරු පැදි දෙකක් පැමිණ ඔහුගේ මොටර් රථය නැවතුවේය. ලසන්ත සිටි රියදුරු අසුනේ වීදුරුව අසලට පැමිණි නාදුනන තුවක්කුකරුවෙකුගේ වෙඩි පහරට ලක්වූ ලසන්ත කාර්යාලයට යනවා වෙනුවට ගියේ රෝහලටය. ජීවිතයත් මරණයත් අතර සටනක් කරමින් සිටි ලසන්ත සැත්කමකට භාජනය කිරීමෙන් පසුව නැවත මෙලොවට පැමිණියේ නැත.
මෙලොව හැරගිය ලසන්ත මියගොස් වසරයක් වන විට සියලූම දෙනා ලසන්ත සැමරීමට කාර්යාලට පැමිණ සිටියේය. ඔහු ආරම්භ කළ සන්ඬේ ලීඩර් පුවත්පතේ කර්තෘ මාණ්ඩලිකයින් විසින් ලසන්තගේ ඡුායාරූපය අසල තිබූ පහන් දැල්වූයේ ඔහු සිහිපත් කිරීම සදහාය.
ලසන්තගේ විශාල ප්රමාණයේ පින්තූරය අසලට ක්රිස්තියානි ආගමික වතාවන් සිදුකෙරිණි. ඔවුන් විසින් ලසන්තගේ ජීවිතය වෙනුවෙන් යාඥා කළේය. මේ අවස්ථාව ලසන්ත පිළිබද ඔහුගේ සමකාලීනයින්ගේ මතකය අලූත් වූ අවස්ථාවක් විය. ඔහු පිළිබදව මතකය අලූත්වූ ලසන්තට ආදරය කළ සියල්ලන්ගේම නෙත් අග කදුළු බිදු රැදී තිබුනේය. සිය කතුවරයා ආයතන ප්රධානියා වෙනුවෙන් නෙත් අගට ආ කදුළු බිදු සැගවීමට කිසිවෙක් උත්සාහ කළේ නැත. ඒ කදුළුබිදු නිදහසේ ලසන්තගේ පා පතුල් ඇදී ගිය ලීඩර් කර්තෘ මණ්ඩලයේ බිමට නිදහසේ ඇදී වැටුනේය.
ලසන්ත වෙනුවෙන් කාර්යාලයේදී දේව මෙහෙයන් පවත්වමින් ඔහු සිහිපත් කරන අවස්ථාව වන විට ලසන්තගේ ජීවිතය බිළිගත් ස්ථානයේ සුපුරුදු පරිදි වාහන ගමන් කරමින් මිනිසුන් ඔබ මොබ යමින් තිබුනේය. ලීඩර් පුවත් පත් කාර්යාලයේ සිදුකළ දේව මෙහෙයෙන් පසුව ලසන්තගේ පවුලේ හිතවතුවන් ඔහුට වෙඩි තැබූ ස්ථානයට පැමිණියේය. සුන්දර සිනාවකින් යුත් ලසන්තගේ පින්තූරයක් ඒ අසල තැබූ හිතවත්තු එය අසල ඉටි පන්දම් දල්වමින් ලසන්ත සිහිපත් කළේය.
එක්වරම විශාල පිරිසක් පැමිණ ඉටිපන්දම් දල්වමින් සිදුකරන්නේ කුමක්දැයි යන්න පිළිබදව ඒ අවස්ථාවේදී එතැනින් ගමන් කරන බොහෝ දෙනාට දැනගැනීමට අවශ්යවී තිබුනේ නැතත් එක්අයෙක් දෙදෙනෙක් සිදුවන්නේ කුමක්දැයි යන්න පිළිබදව අවධානය යොමුකළේය. වයස අවුරුදු හැටක පමණ අයෙක් පැමිණ එතැන සිටි අයෙකුගෙන් විමසුවේ පාර අසල එක්වරම සිදුවන්නේ කුමක්ද යන්නයි. ලසන්ත ඝාතනය කර වසරක් ගතවී ඇති බව එතැන සිටි අයෙක් ඔහුට පැවසුවේය.
‘‘මෙතැනදීනේ ඒ මහත්තයාට වෙඩි තිබ්බේ. වෙඩි තියලා අවුරුද්දක් වෙනවාද? ඒක හරියට අද ඊයේ වුන දෙයක් වගේනේ.’’ සාමාන්ය මිනිසුන්ට ලසන්ත තවමත් අමකත කර නැති බව පසක් කරමින් ඔහු පැවසුවේය.

One year ago, an Editor was killed
Right as you enter The Sunday Leader, a huge portrait of Lasantha stares at you. He may have been followed waylaid killed, but the memories of him still linger in the minds of those who knew him, and those who read his work at the Sunday Leader.
Today was the first year death anniversary of the editor of the Sunday Leader, Lasantha Wickrematunge. He was shot by unidentified gunmen on his way to his office one year ago, and succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
Civil society, readers of the Sunday Leader, and the public as a whole mobilised to an unprecedented extent at the news of the brutal assassination, and thousands flocked to his funeral possession, which spanned nearly a mile. People displayed their grief at the death, and their anger at the system by holding placards, pictures of the dead editor, and wearing masks.
When I walked into the office of the Sunday Leader office today, it was the same kind of crowd and emotion I was expecting from people. Sadly, it was not to be. Instead what was seen was a handful of close friends, former colleagues, and the current employees of the Sunday Leader, who were present for a memorial service for the slain brethren.
Those who spoke about the memories, spoke of a man who was compassionate towards his fellow human beings, who used the pen to fight against corruption. Those who didn’t speak, spoke more. Tears in the eyes of former colleagues who held their silence spoke of fond memories and strong affections. The same people who lived in a haze following the killing of the Editor.
The memorial service was attended by a few, and Wickrematunge’s colleagues then proceeded to the fateful zebra crossing where the Editor was shot. A photograph of him was placed next to the site of the shooting, and Lal Wikrematunge placed the first candle in front of the picture of his dead brother.
Even though one year has passed since the brutal assassination, no progress has been made in finding out the truth of who killed him. Those who were responsible have not been brought to justice so far, and as Wikrematunge predicted in his posthumous editorial which was widely read and circulated, never will be.
At the site of the shooting, lighting candles, and keeping them lit in the windy road turned into a difficult task – with them being blown out by the gushing winds. A stark reminder that keeping hope in times such as this, is a herculean task in itself.
